With around 1,000 employees, Wesel has been BYK's largest location since 1962. We offer jobs and apprenticeships in the areas of production, laboratory, IT, and administration. BYK produces additives for the coatings, printing inks, and plastics industries. Our additives are manufactured and tested in Wesel and transported to the fully automated high-bay warehouse in Emmelsum for shipment. In recent years, the company has invested a triple-digit million amount in the Wesel site – including in our large digital laboratory.
Synthesis Chemist – Technology Group Rheology & Clays (m/f/d)
Location: Shanghai, Fengxian District
Exciting opportunities await you – as a member of our global R&D development program, you will progress through three structured phases designed to prepare you for a key role in establishing and expanding our Shanghai research hub. Your responsibilities include:
Phase 1 – Training in Wesel (approx. 12 months)
- Completing a comprehensive training program within TG Rheology & Clays, focusing on the synthesis of organic rheology additives and the execution of application tests
- Handling confidential technical data responsibly and in full alignment with company policies
- Building deep expertise in rheological testing methods and global R&D processes
Phase 2 – Relocation to Shanghai
- Conducting synthesis and application research under the strategic guidance of the Wesel site
- Supporting global innovation and technology projects following the “local for global” approach
- Contributing to the establishment and growth of the Shanghai research hub
Phase 3 – Operation and Expansion of the Shanghai Hub
- Leading and executing projects aligned with the needs of local markets (China, India) as well as global initiatives
- Driving collaboration with BYK's worldwide technology hubs
- Fostering strong cross-cultural teamwork and active knowledge exchange
With this profile, you convince us – if you bring a strong academic background in chemistry, enjoy working in international research environments, and communicate confidently across cultures, we warmly invite you to apply. Your key skills and competencies include:
- A completed degree in chemistry (diploma / master's) plus a PhD, with expertise in macromolecular, supramolecular, and/or organic chemistry from a university with high international standards
- First experience in rheology or rheology control
- Familiarity with preparative research laboratory workflows
- Intercultural competence, especially regarding Asian and European environments
- Native-level Mandarin, fluent English; German knowledge is a plus
- Confident use of standard software tools
- Strong team spirit, reliability, and openness in global collaboration
- Analytical, solution-oriented mindset and an independent, structured working style
- Willingness to share information proactively
