The German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East to address questions of local and global significance. It combines region-specific analysis with innovative comparative research on accountability and participation, globalisation and development, peace and security, and global order and foreign policies.

The GIGA IT Department wants to extend its portfolio with services in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital research and administrative tools. The GIGA thus seeks to appoint a

AI and Digital Research Officer (m/f/d).

Applications are invited for a 50% position, preferably starting as soon as possible. Depending on the level of qualification and the resulting exact job profile, remuneration will be in pay group 12 or 13 TV-AVH (comparable to TVöD-VKA).


The successful candidate will work with the Chief Information Officer and the Research Manager, as well as individual researchers and administrative staff to select, develop and implement services and tools that are of strategic relevance for the GIGA and/or conducive to research or non-research tasks in GIGA's units. This will include:

  • advice on the further strategy regarding the use of AI in research and administration at the GIGA
    • ongoing information on developments, discussions, and trends regarding the use of AI in research
    • ongoing information on current and developing legal or compliance requirements
    • ongoing development of the (AI) software portfolio provided to research and administration at the GIGA
  • support for researchers in the development of and application for AI-based research projects
  • technical support (including programming) for researchers in the implementation of research projects that make use of AI or other digital research tools
  • support in the planning, implementation, and operation of AI-based administrative tools and workflows
  • training GIGA staff on legal and compliance aspects of using AI in research and administration.

The candidate has a degree in computer science (or from related fields) and experience working in or with AI-based academic research projects, and is passionate about social science research questions

The candidate has a degree in social sciences (including humanities) and experience working in AI-based academic research projects, and brings the necessary technical (especially programming) skills.

Relevant technical skills include

  • AI models and tools, especially Natural Language Processing
  • strong Python and/or R coding skills
  • general Machine Learning knowledge
  • DevOps and cloud computing skills (Azure, AWS, or other) to set up and maintain platforms and services for applications.

Strong English and German language skills are mandatory.
