Remuneration Group 13 | Limited: 3 years | Starting date: 01.11.2025 | ID: FHMA028/2025 | Deadline: 05.10.2025 | Full-time/Part-time
DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
DESY-IT, in collaboration with photon science user groups at universities and partner facilities, is developing a new standardized approach to real-time, online access to photon science data. Our goal is to close existing standardization gaps and establish a sustainable data service at DESY, which will be rolled out to associated partners. To this end, we will provide freely available software libraries, integrated into established workflows and visualization tools to ensure intuitive usability. The service will be connected to the Helmholtz federated IT infrastructure and core services (HIFIS). With EuXFEL and BESSY II (HZB) as associated partners, the service will be deployed across three facilities, advancing FAIR photon science data and strengthening collaboration and accessibility within the German and European research community. We are seeking two candidates with complementary skill sets who will work in close collaboration to realize this project.
- You analyze and map heterogeneous data formats to a unified scientific data model
- You design and implement transcoding modules to convert heterogeneous data into standardized, API-ready formats
- You define data contracts (schemas, metadata requirements, validation rules) to support access and slicing
- You collaborate with backend engineers to integrate with the server API
- You develop lightweight services or microservices to expose standardized data
- You work with domain scientists to validate data semantics and usability
- You hold an MSc degree in a natural science or have equivalent skills and experience
- You bring strong programming skills in Python and have hands-on experience with scientific data formats such as HDF5 (e.g. h5py, PyNexus, NumPy)
- You possess a solid understanding of REST APls, JSON, OpenAPI, and data serialization methods
- Experience with partial data access patterns is considered a strong asset
- Familiarity with data transformation pipelines and schema validation tools (e.g. JSON Schema, NX Jason, LinkML) is an advantage
- Basic knowledge of DevOps practices, including containerization, Kubernetes, and Cl/CD workflows, is a plus
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well‑being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work‑life balance, we offer flexible working hours, variable part‑time, job‑sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family‑friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV‑AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.
