Jobbeschreibung

The British Government is an inclusive and diversity-friendly employer. We value difference, promote equality and challenge discrimination, enhancing our organisational capability. We welcome and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of disability, race, colour, ethnicity, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, age, veteran status or other category protected by law. We promote family-friendly flexible working opportunities, where operational and security needs allow. The FCDO operates an agile workforce and to facilitate this, you may be required to undertake other duties from time to time, as we may reasonably require.

Do you want to enter the world of international affairs? Are you curious about what relations between the UK and Germany look like in practice? Interested in a future career where you can make a difference as part of a fast-moving, high profile and international environment? Then join us as an intern at the UK's Embassy and Consulates in Germany! We have several internships available throughout 2025-26, based at one of the Germany Network's three locations at the British Embassy in Berlin and the Consulates-General in Munich and Düsseldorf.

Who are we?

The British Embassy and the Consulates-General in Germany are part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

We aim to be a diverse and inclusive employer, welcoming to people of all backgrounds. The senior leadership is committed to ensuring that we are a supportive and fair place to work.

Main purpose of the internship programme:

During your internship, you will have the chance to work with colleagues across the whole team and become actively involved in a variety of areas and issues through analytical, organisational, communication and administrative tasks.

You will have a manager to support you throughout your internship and you will gain insights and first-hand experience supporting international work across your assigned role.

In addition to those listed above, you might find yourself:

  • Researching policy for a strategy paper or briefing for a Minister or Ambassador;
  • Conducting market research on specific sectors and gathering feedback from businesses through a mixture of desk research and attending trade fairs / conferences;
  • Planning and helping to deliver events, receptions and VIP visit programmes;
  • Researching and drafting communications e.g. for articles, interviews, speeches and social media.

We strongly encourage students from all backgrounds to apply. We welcome applications from all university disciplines – we are more interested in your motivation for applying to the internship with us and the skills that you bring, rather than your background, work experience or studies to date.

Candidates must speak German and English and be enrolled in a German university or a university within the EU for the whole duration of the 3 months' internship.

The location, and the starting date of the internship are flexible (subject to the number of applicants and positions available) and you will have the chance to indicate your preference as part of your application.

You'll work in one of the following teams:

1) Department of Business and Trade (DBT)

Our mission in DBT Germany is to encourage trade and investment between the UK and Germany and improve market access for businesses. This is critical to our economies, supporting millions of jobs and driving economic growth. We are a large team spread across three offices in Germany, dealing with a breadth of international trade issues.

During your time with us you will have the opportunity to work with DBT teams based in Germany, the UK and across Europe. Your tasks might include: analytical reporting; preparing briefing for the Country Director and other senior government officials; joining meetings with external contacts; supporting event and visit organisation and logistics; working on research projects; helping to develop internal systems; supporting the team with admin and organisational tasks. We're looking for candidates who are enthusiastic self-starters, good team players and communicators and who have an interest in international trade relations.

2) Human Resources & IT Management

Our Corporate Services team keeps the embassy running behind the scenes—supporting people, systems, and strategy to make sure everything works seamlessly. Our “Human Resources” and “IT Management” interns will support two exciting teams.

Human Resources (HR)
Curious about how people make organizations thrive? As an HR intern, you'll get hands-on experience with everything from preparing contracts and onboarding new staff to supporting diplomats and drafting official documents. You'll be part of a team that supports every corner of the embassy, giving you a front-row seat to how HR keeps things running smoothly. It's a great chance to build practical skills and see the real impact of your work.

IT Management
Want to see how IT keeps an embassy connected—without needing to be a tech expert? As an IT intern, you'll help organize documentation, coordinate meetings, and support internal communications and training sessions. You'll be the go-to person for keeping information flowing and making sure the team stays on track. It's the perfect role to sharpen your organizational and communication skills while getting to know people across the entire workplace.

3) Public Diplomacy & Internal Politics (PDIP)

PDIP uses comms to multiply the impact of our work and ensure that the UK's messages reach the right audiences. Our teams also monitor German domestic politics and host soft power events to advance our bilateral relationship and promote the UK.

We are offering two internship opportunities:

Our Comms Intern will help to draft social media copy, design and film social media content, write press releases and plan media campaigns. You'll need to be creative, efficient and strategic, picking the right medium for the right message. You'll also need your finger on the pulse of social media, able to capitalise on trending content to connect with audiences. You'll join a five-person team and will be supported by one of our Communications Officers.

Our Soft Power Intern will help to design, deliver and assess the impact of our cultural events. You'll come up with ideas for ways to get influential people in the room by deploying British music, cultural touchpoints and sporting events. You'll also be interested in data – using it to analyse the success of each event and comparing attendance rates, feedback responses and average seniority to give us advice on what events we should run in the future. You'll be part of a six-person team and will be supported by the Head of Team.

4) Foreign, Security and Development Team (FSD)

The team works on some of the UK‘s top priorities in Germany, from supporting Ukraine, to the Middle East, development and security policy, and a range of other key issues.

You will work with colleagues across the section to develop a comprehensive engagement strategy for the new German Bundestag, supporting the team to identify and engage priority partners, including arranging meetings and events as part of that plan. You will also assist the team in implementing parts of the recently signed UK-DE Treaty on Friendship and Bilateral Cooperation. We're looking for someone with a demonstrable interest in politics, and ideally also in foreign, security, and/or development policy, as well as good research and communication skills.

As for the location of the internship, please note that the work locations will be mainly in Berlin, with exception of two positions for DBT, which will be based in either Munich or Düsseldorf.

Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity!

Our Ideal Candidate shows:

  • Excellent German and English language skills (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Have an interest in business, economics, foreign policy, politics and/or supporting the UK-DE bilateral relationship;

  • Drive and enthusiasm, combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team;
  • Resourcefulness and strong research skills with the ability to act on your own initiative to find creative solutions to problems;
