Purpose of the Job
An interface programmer in a chemical R&D department is responsible for automating processes and integrating/connecting different (device) software systems and databases used in the department. The purpose of this role is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the research process. This can also help to reduce errors, improve the reproducibility of experiments, and facilitate collaboration between different members of the department.


  • Interoperability: Ensuring that different software systems and tools work together seamlessly is the key accountability. This involves integrating APIs, managing data exchange between systems, and troubleshooting any issues that arise.
  • Process Automation: Responsible for identifying areas where processes can be automated.
  • Training and Support: Training R&D staff on how to use the software interfaces they co-develop and providing ongoing technical support.
  • Documentation: maintain proper documentation for all software development and maintenance activities.
  • Data Visualization: Creating dashboards and reports to help researchers visualize data trends and make informed decisions.
  • Communication: Active exchange with R&D management and various stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel and stay for extended periods at our other locations in Germany and Italy as needed to support project requirements.

Formal Education

  • Successfully completed vocational training in IT or Bachelor in Computer Science.

Working Experience

  • 0-3 years relevant working experience

Required Personal and Professional Skills

  • Very good English skills, German skills (B1)
  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, JavaScript, or C#
  • Initial experience with Power BI, AI, REST, SOAP, JSON and XML. Knowledge of relational and object-oriented databases, as well as database languages like SQL/NoSQL
  • Understanding of web development concepts like HTTP protocol, PHP, web servers, etc
