GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the world's largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. We are looking for the following person for the IT department as soon as possible:
Research Assistant (all genders) as member of the HPC Cluster Group

- Provision, maintenance and operation of container-based workload management systems such as Kubernetes and Slurm
- Installation and automated provisioning of enterprise Linux clusters based on PXE, Kickstart and Anaconda
- Ensuring the system stability, scalability and performance of high-performance computers (HPC)
- Development, maintenance and operation of monitoring solutions with Prometheus and Grafana, including the creation of exporters and dashboards.
- Automation of system configuration and provisioning with Ansible and CINC to increase efficiency and reliability
- Management of version control systems (e.g. Git, GitLab) for configurations and automation scripts
- Maintenance and management of Linux package repositories (DNF, RPM) to ensure software availability in cluster environments
- Participation in the design and implementation of storage and distribution solutions as well as the associated monitoring infrastructure for GSI/FAIR
- Publish open-source software solutions and research contributions on relevant scientific repositories.
- Successfully completed studies (Master, Diploma) in computer science, physics or a comparable course of study
- Profound knowledge in the deployment and administration of Kubernetes and/or Slurm clusters
- Experience in Linux system administration (RHEL, CentOS, Rocky Linux) and automated system setup with PXE, Kickstart and Anaconda
- Experience in error analysis and performance optimization of HPC systems
- Knowledge in the setup and maintenance of Prometheus/Grafana monitoring systems, incl. exporter development and dashboard creation.
- Independent and structured way of working and ability to work in a team in the HPC environment
- Good written and spoken German and English.
The role combines strong software engineering expertise with scientific computing, offering the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to research infrastructure while working with cutting-edge technologies.
Your working style is structured and independent. The use of documentation tools during your work is an efficient support for you. You have strong communication skills, a confident manner, as well as a high level of methodological and social competence, you are ready to acquire missing knowledge independently. The ability to work in a team across groups and a solution-oriented working style are required.

The position is initially limited to 2 years. The salary is based on the collective agreement TVöD (Bund) applicable at GSI. Home office is partly possible by mutual agreement.
