Jobbeschreibung

The Medical Center - University of Freiburg is a maximum care hospital with over 2,100 beds, whose catchment area extends from Basel to Karlsruhe, from the French border to Lake Constance. Around 90,000 inpatients and around 900,000 outpatients are treated every year. The University Medical Center employs more than 15,000 people and is one of the largest employers in the region.

New Emmy Noether Group led by Dr. Julian Wolf M.Sc. at the University Eye Center Freiburg is looking as soon as possible for a

with focus on the analysis of cutting-edge liquid biopsy proteomics, transcriptomics and other omics data sets related to blinding diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

AMD is the most common cause of vision loss in elderly affecting about 300 million people by 2040. Currently, there is no effective treatment for the majority of these patients. The goal of this project is to combine cutting-edge multi-omics technology, data analytics, machine learning and clinical samples from the human eye to decipher new insights into disease mechanisms and to identify new therapeutic targets and prognostic biomarkers. Novel data integration methods allow to identify signatures of retinal cell types in liquid biopsies without the need for a direct retinal tissue biopsy. The project is funded by the Emmy Noether programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG) for a three-year period, with the possibility of an additional three years.

  • analysis of high-throughput proteomic, (single cell) transcriptomic, digital spatial and other omics data in health and disease states
  • multi omics data integration
  • implementation of machine learning in data analysis
  • development and implementation of custom data analysis pipelines
  • manage your own projects and work on various data analysis projects (independently and in our team)
  • involvement in teaching across di erent life science study programs at the Faculty of Medicine

  • Ph.D. (or comparable) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or related field, or Biology / Biochemistry / Molecular Medicine with strong bioinformatics background (m/f/d)
  • high-quality publications covering relevant topics (see below)
  • demonstrated experience with omics data analyses guided by strong biological understanding
  • demonstrated experience in statistical analysis and development of computational tools
  • documented programming skills, preferably in R
  • documented excellent and intuitive graphical presentation of data analyses for presentation and publication
  • excellent English language skills (speaking and writing)
  • comprehensive presentation of results in group meetings and at conferences
  • a strong interest in translational research, to acquire biological knowledge and to work together with physicians and life scientists
  • ability to work independently and in a team
