With a fleet of 287 modern container ships and a Vessel Capacity 2.2 million TEU, as well as a Container Capacity 3.2 million TEU including one of the world's largest and most modern reefer container fleets, Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world's leading liner shipping companies. In the Terminal & Infrastructure segment, Hapag-Lloyd has stakes in 20 terminals in Europe, Latin America, the United States, India, and North Africa. The roughly 2.600 employees assigned to the Terminal & Infrastructure segment deal with terminal-related activities and provide complementary logistics services at selected locations.


The Mergers & Acquisitions department pursues the expansion of equity investments in strategically prioritized verticals. The M&A team is core to the successful implementation of the ‘Strategy 2030' and holds responsibility for M&A processes for all global divisions, including the Terminal & Infrastructure segment. The focus of the role is project work in M&A processes, particularly on the buy-side. Hapag-Lloyd looks back on many years of successful M&A activity and intends to further expand the existing team.
  • Participation in M&A projects and responsibility for subprojects/workstreams as part of larger M&A transactions
  • Planning, coordination, execution and evaluation of all activities necessary for the realization of M&A projects in time, budget and quality
  • Steering of M&A project teams as well as coordination of internal and external stakeholders along the entire M&A process (PMO, Due Diligence coordination, contract negotiation (preparation), synergy planning and preparation of initial integration plan, etc.)
  • Preparation and detailed analysis of business plans of potential target companies
  • Valuation of target companies using various valuation methods
  • Approach of and relationship management with sell-side (and buy-side) representatives
  • Participation in the further development of a high-quality and smooth standard M&A end to end process for Hapag-Lloyd
  • Participation in the further development of the M&A strategy as part of the overall corporate strategy
  • Conduct of market and competitive analysis as well as monitoring and analysis of competitor M&A activities
  • Identification of potential acquisition targets (long list and criteria-rated short list) based on the overall corporate and M&A strategy
  • Participation in the development of transaction models and structures
  • Preparation of M&A decision reports, ad-hoc analyses and presentations for top management (executive board and supervisory board)

  • University degree, for example in economics, business, law, logistics, finance, engineering, natural sciences, or a comparable field or equivalent education
  • Relevant practical experience (at least 4 years) in a M&A, corporate finance or controlling department of a comparable company, strategy or M&A consulting firm, investment bank or in the transaction services or M&A department of an auditing firm
  • Experience in interdisciplinary project work with different departments as well as experience in managing of M&A projects (PMO, Due Diligence, Deal Management, etc.)
  • Quick comprehension and structured approach to complex problems as well as working with a clear end product orientation
  • Very strong analytical and conceptual skills as well as target-group and event-oriented presentation skills
  • Independent and output-oriented way of working with a high level of commitment and flexibility
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills as well as the ability to work effectively with different stakeholders
  • Very good knowledge of modelling and analyzing integrated business plans as well as confident handling of common business valuation methods and models
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and experience in communicating with various audiences including top management
  • Confident handling of MS Office software (particularly MS Excel and PowerPoint) as well as M&A and financial databases, such as Mergermarket, Factset, etc.
  • Fluent English language skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel
