VARO Energy is a dynamic, fast developing, integrated European downstream company launched in 2012. Our ambitious acquisition and integration strategy created a major energy company that cares for its customers across North-Western Europe. We have a solid background in traditional energies, with a refining capacity of 176,000 bbl./day and a total storage capacity of almost 2,5mio m3. In the meantime, through our ONE VARO strategy, we are transforming ourselves into a leading energy transition company with a strong strategic focus on green hydrogen, bio-methane and bio-LNG, biofuels, carbon offsets and E-mobility. Renewables already contribute half of our total annual result and we are looking to expand further in this area. Leveraging our knowledge in the renewables space will not only allow us to make a positive contribution to the energy transition, it will also enable us to further grow our market share. We will do so via our strong marketing organisation with activities in wholesale, retail and end-consumer deliveries. In combination with our sophisticated supply & trading and biofuels organisation, we excel at unlocking value from our Integrated Fuels Value Chains (FVCs).

Communications Manager (m/f/x)

The position
Working closely with VARO Germany organisation and the VARO corporate communications team, the Geographic Communications Manager is responsible for providing communications support to local leadership by developing and implementing internal and external communication plans which strengthen the brand and visibility of VARO in Germany. This includes promoting the sustainable and reliable energy solutions of the company and positioning VARO as the energy transition partner of choice.

This role requires an understanding of and experience with most effective geographic communication channels to effectively engage with regional stakeholders including employees, customers, partners, media, and local communities. The Communication Manager will collaborate closely with corporate communications to ensure consistent messaging and branding.


  • Communications Strategy/Planning/Execution:
  • Develop and implement communications strategies tailored for the German market, working closely with the geographic organisation.
  • With guidance from VARO corporate communication, align geographic communications with overall corporate ob­jec­tives, ensuring local communications are consistent with corporate brand and messaging.
  • Adapt and translate corporate communication messages as needed, to effectively resonate with the local audience, including localizing messaging and addressing region-specific issue.
  • Help the country leadership with talking points, speeches, presentations.
  • Work with country commercial leadership to develop a plan which articulates and communicates the customer value proposition of VARO's portfolio to target audiences through key marketing and communication channels.
  • Crisis communications – manage communications during crises or sensitive situations in Germany with guidance from VARO HSSE, country leadership and corporate communications.
  • Internal Communications: Develop and implement internal communicates plans to ensure employees are informed and aligned with company goals, including relevant postings on com­pany Intranet site and supporting leadership on local employee engagement sessions. Help foster a sense of community and transparency among regional employees.
  • Digital and Social Media Management – Develop and drive a social media plan relevant for stra­tegic audiences in Germany, including creating local content and adapting corporate content.
  • Community Engagement: Represent VARO communications at select industry associations in line with company objectives with those organisations. Provide communications support on strategic local advocacy, working closely with country leadership for direction.
  • Coordinate with strategic joint venture partners in Germany and ensure communications are aligned.
  • Website: Work with VARO website communications focal point to keep German content on com­pany website updated. Ensure accurate content in support of geographic communications strategy.
  • Media Relations: Understand the local media landscape to support corporate media outreach efforts led by corporate communications.
  • Measurement: Analyse performance of communications activities to refine future efforts and provide updates to geographic and communications leadership on learnings, effectiveness. Use digital analytics to understand and apply learnings to maximize website and social media engagement.

  • Strong understanding of communication preferences and best practices in Germany.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Experience with digital communication platforms, social media.
  • Knowledge / experience in energy sector / sustainable energies sector a plus.
  • Highly organized with the ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field – alternatively traineeship or education within the field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in corporate communications, marketing communications, or related roles, with a focus on geographic-specific communications.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and communication software/tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in German and strong English language skills (corporate language).
