An industrial production consists of different machines which are continuously producing data. Applying machine learning models on these machines mostly leads to specific models for single machines which are trained on limited available data. Over the time more data is collected which may include data or label shifts while at the same time historic data is no longer available. Recent domain adaption approaches address this issue by variations of transfer learning and regularization. The main limitation is that these approaches still suffer from forgetting and are limited in the shifts they can work with.

  • In this work, you will investigate an approach which can be sequentially applied to different previously unknown machine tools. The approach should be able to remember as well as re-use already learned characteristics and hence prevent forgetting.
  • At the same time, the approach should be able to increase the model capacity if new data cannot be processed with the existing architecture without forgetting. You will investigate the potentials and limitations of such an approach.

  • Education: excellent Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related subject
  • Experience and Knowledge: experience with machine learning, excellent programming skills (preferably in Python), knowledge with machine learning frameworks like PyTorch and preferably experience with tooling machines as well as machine controllers
