The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (Kiel Institute) is seeking a
(Junior) Outreach Manager/in
based in Berlin, to start in January 2026.
The Kiel Institute aims to be Europe's preeminent research institute for global economic affairs, combining cutting-edge research on par with leading economics departments with visible and lasting policy impact on the national and international level.
For our renowned German Real Estate Index (GREIX) research project and the Kiel-CEPR Research Hub in Berlin, we are looking for a highly motivated part time (75%) (Junior) Outreach Manager located in Berlin.
GREIX is a highly relevant research project with significant media visibility that aims to promote transparency in the German real estate market. We combine data from notarized transaction databases with rental offer data to provide academia, policymakers and the public with up-to-date information on the German real estate market. We also conduct comprehensive economic research on real estate markets.
Our Berlin office – the Kiel-CEPR Research Hub jointly with the Centre for Economic Policy Research – plays a central role in disseminating our research. As an international hub in the capital, the Berlin office serves as a dynamic research location and meeting place for exchanges with policymakers, the business community, think tanks and the media. In close cooperation with CEPR, we organize a wide range of formats for exchange and discussion, from exclusive roundtables held under the Chatham House Rule to multi-day academic conferences.
This is a unique opportunity for early-career outreach professionals to use their practical experience in science communication and event management to make the Kiel Institute's research visible and tangible through modern communication formats and effective exchange platforms, to place topics and ideas on the policy agenda, to shape the economic policy debate and to foster academic exchange – at the interface of research, policy advice and education.
Science communication for the GREIX research project
- Translating complex research findings into accessible content for the public, expert audiences and policymakers
- Editorial responsibility for research-related content including texts, newsletters, brochures and presentations
- Drafting press releases, articles and editorial contributions
- Preparing cross-media content on economic research topics in German and English
- Expanding and managing social media channels, including concept development, editorial planning and implementation
- Developing new communication formats and strategies and communicating research in non-academic formats
- Conceptualizing, managing and further developing the project website and related content
Event management for the Berlin office
Independent organization and coordination of smaller events such as workshops and roundtables, as well as support in organizing and implementing larger conferences:
- Concept development and planning in coordination with internal stakeholders and external partners (e.g. cooperation partners, communications, web support, finance, procurement)
- Obtaining quotes and coordinating with service providers (caterers, restaurants, venues, hotels, technical service providers)
- Managing contact data, invitations, participants and speakers, including research, data maintenance and correspondence
- Preparing participant lists, invitations, agendas, programs and briefings
- On-site support during events, including coordination of the schedule and stakeholders, welcoming and taking care of participants
- Documentation, invoice and budget control
- Completed university degree with a focus on communication, media or educational sciences, marketing or a comparable field
- Proven experience in science communication, public relations or related roles, ideally in an academic environment, including:
- Translating complex research findings into accessible content for different target groups (public, expert audiences, policymakers)
- Willingness to familiarize yourself quickly with new (academic) subject areas
- Proven experience in event management, ideally in an academic or policy-related environment
- An asset: experience in written and in-person communication with high-ranking individuals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English (both at least C1 level)
- Strong conceptual skills, creativity and affinity for new media, as well as ideas for outreach formats
- Very good organizational skills, a proactive hands-on approach, independence and a forward-thinking work style
- High degree of independence and initiative, with a proactive, hands-on, solution-oriented and pragmatic mindset
- Open-minded and confident manners, and excellent communication skills when interacting with external stakeholders, both in writing and in person
- Ability to work well with others, take the initiative and quickly familiarize yourself with new scientific topics
- Very good command of Microsoft 365 applications and social media
- An asset: basic knowledge of graphic design, content management systems, UX/UI, SEO and data protection (GDPR)
The position offers a competitive salary in line with the German public sector pay scale (depending on qualifications pay grade EG 12 TV-L or EG 13 TV-L). The contract will end no later than 31 December 2028, the official end of the third-party funding for this project. An extension may be possible. We aim to fill the position by January 2026.
