Scientific Nautical Officer (f/m/d) as part of a research project / Wissenschaftliche:r Nautiker:in (w/m/d) im Forschungsprojekt

Reference number: FK5-12-2025, salary group 13 TV-L

with full weekly working hours (39.2 hours) for a fixed term until 30.04.2028.

The aim of the LetsROC project (Remote Operation Center for (semi-)autonomous shipping) is to develop and certify concepts and solutions for human-machine interaction in remote operation centers (ROCs) for monitoring and controlling a MASS fleet in maritime shipping. This requires the identification of operationally relevant scenarios (e.g., docking, pilotage and sea passage under various environmental and traffic conditions) and requirements as well as the identification of parameters such as navigation status, course, speed, other ship parameters, sensor data, system states and error messages. Last but not least, the integration of this data from simulators into the ROC platform will be an important contribution by HSB.

If the formal requirements are met and the candidate is willing to pursue a doctorate, a doctorate based on the project will be supported.


  • You will work on the LetsROC project in the Remote Operation Center research project for (semi-)autonomous shipping.
  • You will plan and conduct workshops as part of the project and document the results.
  • This also includes coordinating development work in ship simulators in consultation with project and industry partners.
  • You will ensure that project milestones are achieved.
  • You will publish the research results in scientific journals and present them at conferences.
  • You will also participate in future funding applications.

  • You have a university degree (master's/university diploma) in nautical science and maritime transport or a related field.
  • You have an analytical view of complex interrelationships and the ability to think in an interdisciplinary manner.
  • You already have experience in managing complex projects with time-sensitive objectives.
  • You are committed, structured and independent in your research and enjoy being part of a team.
  • You enjoy the challenge of shaping new fields and have strong skills in communicating respectfully with various stakeholders.
  • You have very good written and spoken English skills and are confident in using common MS Office applications.
  • Good written and spoken German skills would be a great advantage.

Desirable are

  • Experience with simulation, ideally in the maritime sector, in particular human-machine interface (HMI)
  • Experience with maritime protocols (NMEA0183)
