HPC System Administrator (f/m/d)

Job Description

Since 1962, Bavarian universities and research institutions have relied on the IT expertise of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. When it comes to the digital transformation of science, we are traditionally ahead of the game.


  • maintaining the operating system installation of varied Linux servers throughout multiple HPC clusters, including
    1. the national supercomputer at LRZ and
    2. additional state-wide HPC clusters of various size
  • operation of Ethernet networks
  • bug hunting and fixing, often in collaboration with vendor companies
  • certified, transparent processes


  • university degree (master or above) in computer science, mathematics, or natural sciences with a background in high-performance computing
  • knowledge and experience in the system administration of Linux servers including security considerations and hardening
  • knowledge about compiled programming languages (e.g. C, C++)
  • knowledge about scripted programming languages (e.g. Shell, Python)
  • ability to work in both modes, autonomously as well as in a team
  • excellent German and English in writing and speaking
  • You like to share experiences and put procedures to the test in order to improve them with the team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • experience with Linux operating systems, and in particular with the distributions
    1. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
    2. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES)
    3. debian
  • experience in the installation and operation of Linux clusters with cluster-management tools like confluent
  • experience with
    1. Ethernet networks
    2. High-Performance Interconnects
    3. Parallel Filesystems

full time (40 hrs) / part-time possible

flexible working model with electronic time recording

Term of the contract

24 months, a further employment is intended

Remuneration

up to E 13, see Entgelttabelle TV-L

Annual leave / compensatory time off

30 days

(24.12. + 31.12. additionally day off)

Overtime is compensated by additional time off

Individual support for in-service training and further education

Mobile work

Although mobile working is possible in principle (up to 60% of work time), working in the office is preferred
