European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

For our IT & Data Management group we are looking for an

IT System Engineer – Kubernetes and Storage Infrastructure (f/m/d)


  • Understand and refine infrastructure needs to ensure Kubernetes environments are purpose-built
  • Configure, monitor, and maintain on-premises Kubernetes clusters to ensure high availability and performance
  • Administer and troubleshoot back-end storage systems, including block, object, and file storage solutions
  • Collaborate with development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to deploy, scale, and manage containerized applications effectively.
  • Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation of systems, processes, and best practices
  • Participate in the facility operational support to ensure the ongoing stability and reliability of our infrastructure

  • Bachelor degree in Information Technology or equivalent by experience
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of Linux (RedHat, Ubuntu) – from networking to security and system-level troubleshooting
  • Solid experience with Kubernetes and Docker
  • Understanding of web technologies – Proxies, APIs, JWT, SSL, etc.
  • Knowledge of storage technologies and how they integrate with Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern deployment practices
  • Good communication skills in English
