The Innovation Expert Laser for Biomedical Imaging and Therapy will

  • lead the selection of medical laser systems and accompany such products until market introduction, including technical verification and clinical validation

  • be an active driver of innovations in the field of biomedical lasers according to the “Creating Innovations” process: idea generation, IP generation and screening, project initiation and presentation to the Innovation board, project management as well as technical realization and transfer to the main development process

  • establish and manage a network of technical experts within ZEISS, academia and industry

  • systematically screen and report technology developments in the field of biomedical laser technology to contribute to the technology roadmap and the “Creating Innovation” process

  • identify arising technologies, assess their application and disruption potential, and discusses them with the respective Application Experts

  • create IP to protect innovations and screen IP in the expert domain;

  • support the creation and management of technology roadmaps;

  • constantly increase the medical application understanding by customer interactions

  • stay in close touch with technological developments and proactively utilize this know-how in the “Creating Innovations” process


  • University degree in natural sciences or engineering.

  • a Ph.D. degree is preferred

  • a very good overview of latest research and industry trends in Biomedical Technologies as well as the proven ability to understand customer needs and to solve real-world problems

  • ideally expertise in developing medical devices (R&D processes, documentation and requirement engineering, design, test, verification and validation)

  • experience in creating innovations (idea and IP protection, proof-of-principle demonstration, ideally including the transfer to product development) and project management. Preferably experience in the medical technology domain and in medical device development
